Sorbitol Free Recipes
Sorbitol is the sneakiest FODMAP to watch out for and turns up in unexpected places from fruit to medicine and toothpaste.
As with mannitol, sorbitol is a sugar alcohol in the polyol category of FODMAPs. It's often widely used as an artificial sweetener in processed foods, particularly sugar-free products. It has a strong laxative effect and regularly comes with a warning on packets of gum, mints and sweets, not to eat too much. It's also used in liquid medicines, cough syrups and lozenges to add sweetness.
Sorbitol is found naturally in apples, aubergine, bok choy, green bell pepper, pears and most stone fruit including avocados. Some of these foods have small, low FODMAP safe servings whilst others need to be restricted during the elimination phase.
